This paper remedies this problem by introducing a novel simple-to-use method for accurately calculating the average error rates of digital modulation schemes. The proposed method generalizes the well-known Chernoff bound and the moment generating function methods. The simplicity of the proposed method facilitates new insights into the design of digital modulation schemes which are not possible when traditional methods of the performance analysis are used.
