This work was funded by EPSRC (EP/E00119X/1, &#xA3; 324,601) and explored physical grain refinement possibilities in industrial Mg-alloys using ultrasonic irradiation showing encouraging results. The practical significance of developing fine-grained Mg-alloys through solidification processing stems from a drive to improve strength and ductility of HCP Mg-alloys as metalworking is expensive. Furthermore, no commercial refiner is available for industrially important Al-containing Mg-alloys.
