In adults, this structural adaptation is often associated with the adaptation of left ventricular (LV) twist mechanics. For example, an increase in LV twist often follows an expansion in end-diastolic volume, whereas a reduction in twist may follow a thickening of the LV walls. While structural cardiac remodeling has been shown to be more prominent post–peak height velocity (PHV), it remains to be determined how this maturation-dependent structural remodeling influences LV twist. Therefore, we aimed to (1) compare LV twist mechanics between trained and untrained children pre- and post-PHV and (2) investigate how LV structural variables relate to LV twist mechanics pre- and post-PHV.MethodsLeft ventricular function and morphology were assessed (echocardiography) in endurance-trained and untrained boys (n = 38 and n = 28, respectively) and girls (n = 39 and n = 34, respectively). Participants were categorized as either pre- or post-PHV using maturity offset to estimate somatic maturation.ResultsPre-PHV, there were no differences in LV twist or torsion between trained and untrained boys (twist: P = .630; torsion: P = .382) or girls (twist: P = .502; torsion: P = .316), and LV twist mechanics were not related with any LV structural variables (P > .05). Post-PHV, LV twist was lower in trained versus untrained boys (P = .004), with torsion lower in trained groups, irrespective of sex (boys: P < .001; girls: P = .017). Moreover, LV torsion was inversely related to LV mass (boys: r = −0.55, P = .001; girls: r = −0.46, P = .003) and end-diastolic volume (boys: r = −0.64, P < .001; girls: r = −0.36, P = .025) in both sexes.ConclusionsA difference in LV twist mechanics between endurance-trained and untrained cohorts is only apparent post-PHV, where structural and functional remodeling were related.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography</journal><volume>0</volume><journalNumber/><paginationStart/><paginationEnd/><publisher>Elsevier BV</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint>0894-7317</issnPrint><issnElectronic/><keywords>echocardiography, myocardium, twist, youth, exercise</keywords><publishedDay>4</publishedDay><publishedMonth>12</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2023</publishedYear><publishedDate>2023-12-04</publishedDate><doi>10.1016/j.echo.2023.11.024</doi><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Sport and Exercise Sciences</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>STSC</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><funders/><projectreference/><lastEdited>2024-04-09T16:29:37.6237765</lastEdited><Created>2023-12-06T10:47:38.7881591</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Science and Engineering</level><level id="2">School of Engineering and Applied Sciences - Sport and Exercise Sciences</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Dean R.</firstname><surname>Perkins</surname><orcid>0000-0002-9044-8508</orcid><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Jack S.</firstname><surname>Talbot</surname><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Rachel N.</firstname><surname>Lord</surname><order>3</order></author><author><firstname>Tony G.</firstname><surname>Dawkins</surname><order>4</order></author><author><firstname>Aaron L.</firstname><surname>Baggish</surname><order>5</order></author><author><firstname>Abbas</firstname><surname>Zaidi</surname><order>6</order></author><author><firstname>Orhan</firstname><surname>Uzun</surname><order>7</order></author><author><firstname>Kelly</firstname><surname>Mackintosh</surname><orcid>0000-0003-0355-6357</orcid><order>8</order></author><author><firstname>Melitta</firstname><surname>McNarry</surname><orcid>0000-0003-0813-7477</orcid><order>9</order></author><author><firstname>Stephen-Mark</firstname><surname>Cooper</surname><order>10</order></author><author><firstname>Rhodri S.</firstname><surname>Lloyd</surname><order>11</order></author><author><firstname>Jon L.</firstname><surname>Oliver</surname><order>12</order></author><author><firstname>Rob E.</firstname><surname>Shave</surname><order>13</order></author><author><firstname>Mike</firstname><surname>Stembridge</surname><order>14</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>65224__29219__8ae87ebfd2b34a60908675b2b3f7ac66.pdf</filename><originalFilename>65224 AAM.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2023-12-06T11:22:41.2770755</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>1128088</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Accepted Manuscript</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><documentNotes>Author accepted manuscript document released under the terms of a Creative Commons CC-BY licence using the Swansea University Research Publications Policy (rights retention).</documentNotes><copyrightCorrect>true</copyrightCorrect><language>eng</language><licence>https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/</licence></document></documents><OutputDurs/></rfc1807> |
