This report documents the findings of a project funded through the Welsh AssemblyGovernment’s Economic Research Grant scheme in 2007-8 to provide acomparative assessment of the scale of entrepreneurial aspirations amongststudents in higher education. The primary focus was on gathering survey data fromWelsh students, along with students from a range of other university institutionselsewhere in Europe. The principle objectives of the project were to assess thefactors which influence the formation of entrepreneurial aspirations and to assess theextent to which students perceive that they are well-prepared to begin new businessventures and to which they perceive entrepreneurship to be a rewarding careerchoice.The report is based on a mix of quantitative and qualitative data, provided throughthe use of an internet-based survey instrument, supplemented by a fifteen in-depthinterviews with students in two Welsh universities, and informed by discussions witha three Wales Knowledge Exploitation Fund supported higher educationentrepreneurship development officers. The approach adopted in the report takes itslead from an assessment of the academic literature on the formation ofentrepreneurial intention, and is therefore multidisciplinary in approach. It draws onperspectives and insights from economics, psychology and organisational studies.The composition of the research team, and of expert individuals consulted as part ofthe research, reflects this. |
