The aim of this paper is to analyse the importance of SSs and their related technologies in improving business performance. Through an initial systematic review of sixty-one papers, the authors identify six key determinants that lead to the effective application of SSs in business systems, namely, the application of effective managerial skills, supply chain integration, financial analysis, business performance, strategic and operational capabilities, and technologies. The work then goes on to develop an industry case study that informs thinking on the capabilities of smart technologies in collaborative working environments and then onto the development of a practice-focused framework for future research. This study identifies that the implementation of SSs within organisations not only improves business performance but also their supply chains through the effective integration of business activities and systems, and through the degree to which communication and decision-making is facilitated between humans and devices. This leads to the improvement of quality, speed of information, and information sharing. This study also finds that there is a lack of systems standards that currently govern IoT and SSs integration and data security within businesses.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>Standards</journal><volume>2</volume><journalNumber>3</journalNumber><paginationStart>276</paginationStart><paginationEnd>293</paginationEnd><publisher>MDPI AG</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint/><issnElectronic>2305-6703</issnElectronic><keywords>smart; systems; quality improvement; supply chain; integration; collaborative systems; smart technologies</keywords><publishedDay>1</publishedDay><publishedMonth>7</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2022</publishedYear><publishedDate>2022-07-01</publishedDate><doi>10.3390/standards2030020</doi><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Management School</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>CBAE</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm>Another institution paid the OA fee</apcterm><funders>This research received no external funding.</funders><projectreference/><lastEdited>2024-09-13T12:33:01.4174939</lastEdited><Created>2024-07-04T14:40:43.8609453</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences</level><level id="2">School of Management - Business Management</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Ivett</firstname><surname>Schmidt</surname><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Wyn</firstname><surname>Morris</surname><orcid>0000-0003-4355-2211</orcid><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Andrew</firstname><surname>Thomas</surname><orcid>0000-0002-1942-7050</orcid><order>3</order></author><author><firstname>Louise</firstname><surname>Manning</surname><orcid>0000-0002-9900-7303</orcid><order>4</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>66947__31318__42653f1dbb1849b394e267b7119a6677.pdf</filename><originalFilename>66947.VoR.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2024-09-13T12:30:29.8522681</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>512558</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Version of Record</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><documentNotes>&#xA9; 2022 by the authors.
