Abstract: <p><span>This two-part series explores the value of </span><strong>nursing</strong> <strong>models</strong><span> and considers whether the fundamental concepts, beliefs and values about </span><strong>nursing</strong><span> in these </span><strong>models</strong><span> are relevant to current policy debates about the future of </span><strong>nursing</strong><span>.</span><span> This first article provides:</span><span> an overview of </span><strong>nursing</strong> <strong>models</strong><span>; how and why they were developed; and some key criticisms.</span><span> The second article will examine the </span><strong>models</strong><span> in the context of contemporary </span><strong>nursing</strong><span> practice, with particular reference to recent policy initiatives designed to modernise </span><strong>nursing</strong><span> and to raise standards of care.</span></p>
