| Abstract: |
Medical disorders are commonly associated with a high prevalence of sleep difficulties, which compound medical symptoms and can hinder treatment response. Sleep disturbance commonly follows diagnosis with a medical disorder, but in some cases, a sleep disorder may be a precursor to diagnosis with a medical disorder. Research of the complex and bidirectional relationship between sleep and illness can advance understanding of both medical and sleep disorders and advance the concept of patient-centered care for individuals with complex medical conditions. In this chapter, five common medical disorders that illustrate a diversity of relationships with sleep are outlined: cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, migraine, Type 1 diabetes, and traumatic brain injury. The chapter examines the prevalence, development, consequences, and treatment of sleep disturbance across these five conditions. |
