Sleep disturbance commonly follows diagnosis with a medical disorder, but in some cases, a sleep disorder may be a precursor to diagnosis with a medical disorder. Research of the complex and bidirectional relationship between sleep and illness can advance understanding of both medical and sleep disorders and advance the concept of patient-centered care for individuals with complex medical conditions. In this chapter, five common medical disorders that illustrate a diversity of relationships with sleep are outlined: cancer, obstructive sleep apnea, migraine, Type 1 diabetes, and traumatic brain injury. The chapter examines the prevalence, development, consequences, and treatment of sleep disturbance across these five conditions.
<type>Book chapter</type><journal>The Oxford Handbook of Sleep and Sleep Disorders</journal><volume/><journalNumber/><paginationStart>1183</paginationStart><paginationEnd>1218</paginationEnd><publisher>Oxford University Press</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint>9780197602751</isbnPrint><isbnElectronic>9780197602782</isbnElectronic><issnPrint/><issnElectronic/><keywords/><publishedDay>22</publishedDay><publishedMonth>5</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2025</publishedYear><publishedDate>2025-05-22</publishedDate><doi>10.1093/oxfordhb/9780197602751.013.30</doi><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm/><funders/><projectreference/><lastEdited>2025-06-02T12:34:24.0292328</lastEdited><Created>2025-06-02T12:31:53.9852472</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences</level><level id="2">Swansea University Medical School - Biomedical Science</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Leanne</firstname><surname>Fleming</surname><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Megan</firstname><surname>Crawford</surname><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Bethany</firstname><surname>Martin</surname><order>3</order></author><author><firstname>Mhairi</firstname><surname>Patience</surname><order>4</order></author><author><firstname>Samantha</firstname><surname>Fisher</surname><order>5</order></author></authors><documents/><OutputDurs/></rfc1807>
