Existing studies on IPED coaching are predominantly qualitative, with small, Western-based samples. Methods: This study employed a quantitative, cross-sectional survey to explore the lived experiences of forty-one IPED coaches from diverse global contexts, to examine IPED consumption, related harms, and the scope of coaching services they offer. Results: Coaches reported use of a wide range of injectable and oral steroids, alongside ancillary substances. Coaching practices varied considerably, with client numbers ranging from 0 to over 70. Service provision included bloodwork advice, analysis, and in some cases, drug supply. Conclusion: Findings demonstrate substantial heterogeneity in IPED coaching practices, providing a foundation for the development of a typology that distinguishes informed, evidence-aligned guidance from misinformed or potentially harmful practices within the community.
<type>Journal Article</type><journal>Journal of Drug Issues</journal><volume>0</volume><journalNumber/><paginationStart/><paginationEnd/><publisher>Sage Publications</publisher><placeOfPublication/><isbnPrint/><isbnElectronic/><issnPrint>0022-0426</issnPrint><issnElectronic>1945-1369</issnElectronic><keywords/><publishedDay>21</publishedDay><publishedMonth>1</publishedMonth><publishedYear>2026</publishedYear><publishedDate>2026-01-21</publishedDate><doi>10.1177/00220426251411514</doi><url/><notes/><college>COLLEGE NANME</college><department>Engineering and Applied Sciences School</department><CollegeCode>COLLEGE CODE</CollegeCode><DepartmentCode>EAAS</DepartmentCode><institution>Swansea University</institution><apcterm>SU Library paid the OA fee (TA Institutional Deal)</apcterm><funders>Swansea University</funders><projectreference/><lastEdited>2026-01-22T14:25:27.6363486</lastEdited><Created>2025-12-15T10:12:22.5498484</Created><path><level id="1">Faculty of Science and Engineering</level><level id="2">School of Engineering and Applied Sciences - Sport and Exercise Sciences</level></path><authors><author><firstname>Ellie</firstname><surname>Willmott</surname><order>1</order></author><author><firstname>Luke</firstname><surname>Cox</surname><orcid>0000-0001-7625-4603</orcid><order>2</order></author><author><firstname>Kim</firstname><surname>Krigg</surname><orcid>0009-0002-7045-2259</orcid><order>3</order></author><author><firstname>Steve</firstname><surname>Vigorous</surname><order>4</order></author><author><firstname>Timothy</firstname><surname>Piatkowski</surname><orcid>0000-0002-6177-0266</orcid><order>5</order></author></authors><documents><document><filename>71145__36087__4b3ab59007964af6aab363ab8cc68cbf.pdf</filename><originalFilename>71145.VoR.pdf</originalFilename><uploaded>2026-01-22T14:22:56.1562287</uploaded><type>Output</type><contentLength>590576</contentLength><contentType>application/pdf</contentType><version>Version of Record</version><cronfaStatus>true</cronfaStatus><documentNotes>&#xA9; The Author(s) 2026.
