| Abstract: |
This progress report reviews research at the intersection of cryptocurrencies and geography and focuses on what we call the post-Global Financial Crisis monetary interregnum. We employ the concept of monetary interregnum to help situate cryptocurrencies in a crisis of financial hegemony, the spread of techno-libertarian ideology, and struggles over the future of money. In light of the growing body of research on cryptocurrencies, we argue for longer-term intellectual project focused on the relationship between money, space and ideology. We furthermore argue that conjunctural analysis is particularly well suited for this research given the convoluted and contradictory ideational spaces of cryptocurrencies. Framed via various forms of libertarian, and particularly anti-statist ideologies, the paper is organized around literatures that engage with 1) the social embeddedness of digital technologies, 2) the reproduction of various kinds of libertarian spaces and 3) the implications of cryptocurrencies for geographies of money. |
