Item Description: |
Originality stems from the study being the first experimental intervention to examine Lazarus’ (1991) cognitive motivational relational theory of stress and emotion in a sports context. Its significance relates to the findings supporting the theory’s proposed mechanisms as to how a cognitive-behavioral intervention influences athlete appraisals (i.e., emotional orientation) of their emotions towards upcoming performance and the subsequent effect on actual performance. A number of applied implications for psychologists and coaches’ stress management goal setting practices with athletes are identified. For rigour the experiment was conducted in situ using a high ecological validity design over an prolonged period with collection of data on a number of psychological variables, including indices of performance |
