Its significance relates to the findings supporting the theory’s proposed mechanisms as to how a cognitive-behavioral intervention influences athlete appraisals (i.e., emotional orientation) of their emotions towards upcoming performance and the subsequent effect on actual performance. A number of applied implications for psychologists and coaches’ stress management goal setting practices with athletes are identified.
