Abstract: This dataset demonstrates a thematic analysis approach to analysing newspaper articles from an online database. The data are provided by Dr Maria Pournara and are taken from a media analysis of a sample of 314 articles on organised crime published in UK national newspapers, which was part of her multimethod doctoral thesis. This approach deviates from the mainstream media content analysis method which studies media in a rather rigorous, systematic way and, instead, allows themes to be generated from the data inductively to form the themes that national newspapers use to portray organised crime. This exemplar will be most useful to qualitative researchers who are interested in rigorous coding and media thematic analysis. The dataset file is accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide.
