Item Description: This paper is about a significant discovery for the improvement in the tolerance of a major receiver technology by the means of using a sub-bit delay in the demodulator. We showed through extensive simulations that using optimised sub bit delay in the receiver demodulator significant dispersion tolerance (3dB) and improved tolerance to tight filtering can be obtained in DPSK systems. This is straightforward to apply in practical systems but is totally couter intuitive and unconventional. The paper provides a physical interpretation of why this approach is effective. This work was highly regarded by the company Oclaro and could have commercial application.
